Two Faces of the Seventeenth Century: Velázquez and Rembrandt
This program explores two masterpieces of painting in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art: "Self-Portrait" (1660) by Rembrandt, and "Portrait of Juan de Pareja" (1650) by Velázquez. Rembrandt ‘s "Self-Portrait" is contextualized by the many self-portraits made by the remarkable artist during his lifetime. In contrast, Velázquez’s "Portrait of Juan de Pareja" is examined all on its own, and in close detail, deepening the viewer’s visual understanding of the masterpiece.
