Culture, nature and light: these three elements provide the structure for this exploration of the mind and heart of one of the world’s master architects, Chinese-American I.M. Pei (b. 1917). The film focuses on his latest work: The Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar.

Les Jardins de Metis are unlike any other gardens. In 1926 Elsie Reford transformed her Gaspe fishing camp into a botanical paradise. In 1999 her great grandson Alexander founded the International Garden Festival on the site, which draws artists and architects who create imaginative installations to delight visitors.

Followed by discussion and Q&A with Director Philippe Baylaucq.

SAT 1/29, 2:30PM
Expansive Grounds
Director: Gerburg Rohde-Dahl (Germany)
66 min./2008/color/English and German with English subtitles
Introduced by Rick Bell, FAIA, Executive Director, AIA New York Chapter
Award for Best Reportage, sponsored by Concept Audio-Visuel

From September 2003 to the Fall of 2007, director Rohde-Dahl set up her camera on the Berlin Holocaust Memorial designed by Peter Eisenman. She witnessed not only the architecture of the monument, but also the impact of the Holocaust on visitors to the site. While the film lingers over the visual aspects of the monument, it also conveys the director’s inner states, attitude to the past, political engagement, and current convictions.

Followed by discussion with architect Peter Eisenman, FAIA

SAT 1/29, 4:30PM Reception

SAT 1/29, 5:30PM
The New Rijksmuseum
Director: Oeke Hoogendijk (Netherlands)
120 min./2009/color/Dutch with English subtitles
Introduced by Luc Vrolijks, Founder and Principal, Urban Progress
Jury Award, sponsored by Robichaud Conseil

Spanish architects Antonio Cruz and Antonio Ortiz conceived a grand design for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. From the very start the project was plagued by opposition from the Dutch Cyclists Union and beset by the tortuously slow decision-making process regarding permits and bids, which led to the departures of the project manager, chief curator and museum director. The architects were forced to compromise at every turn and came precariously close to abandoning the project entirely.
