The Google Empire has expanded its reign to the art world. Art Project is the new collaboration between Google and seventeen museums around the world that allows users Street View-style access into museums and detailed views of individual works. The always customizable Google offers a ‘Create an Artwork Collection’ feature so you can curate your own favorites, add notes, and share with others.
Of course Art Project will be a valuable resource for those without access to museums. For students, this feels a bit like what Wikipedia did for libraries. Hopefully this won’t be yet another deterrent from ever leaving the house, but instead a quick and efficient way to browse, gather stats, and inspire people to go see the real thing.
